Books are a vessel of knowledge, insight and empowerment to me. I find joy and inspiration in reading books. It’s no wonder I chose to study English Literature as an undergrad at Queens College. I knew that I found so much joy in reading, writing, and learning.

Reflecting on my favorite books by women so far, I believe these are the top five books that every woman should read because they will encourage her in her path, mental health and her spiritual life.

My favorite books by women so far are “Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier” by Oprah Winfrey and Arthur C. Brooks, “The Garden Within” by Dr Anita Phillips, “Battlefield of the Mind: Winning the Battle in Your Mind” by Joyce Meyers, “Woman Evolve: Break Up with Your Fears and Revolutionize Your Life” by Sarah Jakes Roberts, and “The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times” by Michelle Obama.

1: “Build The Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier” by Oprah Winfrey and Arthur C. Brooks.

I read “Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier” last year and enjoyed it. In this book, the authors describe their experiences and use research to teach us how we can overcome challenges and difficulties in navigating our path to happiness.

I liked reading this book because it helped me better understand my emotions and thinking process. One of my favourite lessons from the book was about finding joy in the little things, like humor. Not taking life so seriously and having a sense of humor to find things that make me laugh and smile continues to be one of my pathways to happiness.

2: “The Garden Within” by Dr Anita Phillips

I first discovered Dr. Anita Phillips through her sermons online at T.D. Jakes channel. Her sermons resonated with me as a Christian who is working on her mental health.

One of my favorite things about this book is that it’s a gift to women who need to understand how to take better care of their minds.

While reading this book, I liked the authenticity of the author’s statements about how our emotional well-being is not about being happy all the time. Rather, it is about feeling all of our emotions. Dr. Anita says that we have to understand that sadness and unhappiness signal that something we value feels far away, and we thus have to do the work to get it.

On Medium, I wrote a review on “Five Things I Learned about Emotional Wellbeing” from Dr Anita Phillips.

3: “Battlefield of the Mind: Winning the Battle of Your Mind” by Joyce Meyer

I read “Battlefield of the Mind: Winning the Battle of Your Mind,” two years ago and I loved it.

Similar to “The Garden Within,” this book is a way to learn more about your mindset but from a spiritual perspective.

I love how this book is filled with scripture and words of wisdom to encourage you when you go through difficulties and challenges in life.

One of my favorite things about this book is that Joyce’s words help us understand that difficulties are a part of life and that, in addition to working on our minds, we must arm ourselves up with prayers when we face challenges.

We must depend on God because it is not by our power and might but by God’s grace and strength that we continue to persevere and become resilient in the face of storms and battles.

4: “Woman Evolve: Break Up with Your Fears and Revolutionize Your Life” by Sarah Jakes Roberts

Sarah Jakes Roberts wrote “Woman Evolve” after the pandemic to encourage women to pursue their goals and pursuits with God in mind.

In the book, she provides women with practical tips and strategies for pursuing goals, meaning and purpose.

One of the things I liked about reading the book is that it teaches us about “spiritual confidence.” Spiritual confidence is knowing that your identity comes from God and that you can do all things because God is with you and for you.

5. “The Light We Carry,” by Michelle Obama

I read “The Light We Carry” a few years back. I first read “Becoming “ and then “The Light We Carry.” I enjoyed reading this book by the former First Lady because she inspires women to know there is something unique and great about each woman.

In her books, Michelle tells us about her story, her journey from being a law student to a Lawyer, her time in the White House, and her path to motherhood.

Through her books, we get to understand more about Michelle.

One of the things I enjoyed about reading her book is her emphasis on vulnerability. Michelle encourages women to stop worrying about whether they fit in or belong. She says we don’t always have to try to be tough but we should express ourselves as we are.

In Conclusion

I enjoy books and will always enjoy reading because it’s a way for me to expand my knowledge and gain inspiration and wisdom.

That being said, some of my favorite books have been written by women who share their paths, experiences, and knowledge for other women as a way to learn from them, to be encouraged, to be strengthened, and to get the tools you need to become a better version of yourself.
