How To Get Mentorship and Maintain It

When going after your professional goals, some guidance is always needed. That’s why seeking mentorship is crucial. Mentors provide support, guidance and resources that can help you with a better understanding of where you are trying to go.

If you would like to have a mentor, here are my tips on how to proceed with that.

Be Sure Of Why You Want A Mentor

First of all, before you go in search of a mentor, understand why you are seeking one in the first place.

Be able to highlight where you are in your career and where you want to go. Understand where you have succeeded and the challenges that you are facing. Being able to understand this makes it that much easier to find the guidance that you are seeking.

Position Yourself To Be In The Right Place

Now that you know why you need mentorship, you have to find ways to be involved in the right circles and communities to meet those people you admire.

You should join organizations that pertain to your professional ambitions. You should network in-person and online. That way, you get to meet and interact with the people that you have admired from afar.

Build Relationship with A Mentor

When you’ve met and interacted with people that you admire, you should build a professional relationship with them. You shouldn’t just directly ask to be mentored. That’s too much pressure. Simply continue to engage with the person.

You should ask questions about their career. You should tell your mentor your story, your aspirations and your challenges.

Over time, as you build the relationship, it could possibly lead to mentorship naturally.

Make Sure That You Don’t Have So Many Expectations

As you build a professional relationship with a mentor, make sure that you don’t have so many expectations. Yes, they are there to provide support and guidance. However, that does not mean that they can give you full access to all the opportunities that you want in life.

Be receptive to the information that they are able to give you. Don’t take advantage of wanting more than what they can provide you. Have an open mind and be respectful of the person giving you their time and advice.

Understand That You Can Have Different Mentors

It’s important that you know that it is possible to have different mentors in your life. You can have mentors in your workplace and also outside of your workplace.

You can have mentorship in the form of family and friends. Have an open mind and don’t expect one person to mentor you in all aspects of life.

Different teachers appear in our lives for different reasons. Just pay attention.

Know That You Too Can Bring Value To The Table

You should understand that mentorship is not a one-way street. You too can offer value to your mentors. Maybe there’s some knowledge and experience that you have that they can benefit from in their profession or their business. Be willing to share. That way, they too will be even more enthusiastic to continue to maintain the relationship.

You Can Also Be A Mentor

When we are looking for support, we often forget that we can provide support for others too. Be willing to offer advice, guidance and support to another woman who could benefit from what you have to say.

How To Maintain Mentorship

Life happens and it can become all too easy to fall out of touch with people. Make sure to keep in touch regularly. Update your mentor on your life. Inquire about how they are doing.

If possible, set a schedule for yourself and mentor to check up each month and discuss the progress or challenges you face in your career.
