It’s Just Rain.

What Happens When It Rains

It’s a rainy day on a Monday morning and I’m in my room

Which happens to be my favourite place to be when it rains

Because I can lie down and hear the sounds of the rain

The movement of cars slowing down on the road

The clanging of doors from the neighbour

And so I begin to think to myself that I must act swiftly

To think deeply

To reflect on something

Anything…

It’s a rainy day on a Monday morning and I’m in my room

Thinking about that boy I once liked

We sat in his car while it rained because he wanted to listen to how it fell

And I said okay.

I looked out his car window as the rain was light and it sounded calm

And I closed my eyes

And I thought to myself that well; this is different.

This is really quite nice.

It’s a rainy day on a Monday morning and I’m in my room

Flipping tirelessly through old diaries, books and journals to convince myself

That today I am going to write something new and something good

But I can’t keep a straight face as my words are all over the place.

It’s a rainy day on a Monday afternoon and I’m in my room

Thinking about where I’ve been

Thinking about that simple day

Three black girls in Queens who sat on the couch to watch a movie

And we laughed.

And we talked.

And it was really such a good day.

It’s a rainy day on a Monday afternoon and I’m in my room

Which happens to be my favourite place to be when it rains

Thinking about that dream I had where I was riding a bike on a sidewalk

On a grey day where it seemed like the rain had just settled

And I appeared calm as I was heading somewhere with such certainty.

It’s a rainy day on a Monday morning and I’m in my room

Which happens to be my favourite place to be when it rains

Not outside being drenched by it all as I try to protect my braids

Not outside where I fuss with this little umbrella which won’t stay open

Not outside because the rain will ruin my day

But inside right here in my room, the rain becomes the best part of my day

But inside right here in my room, I admire how the rain falls in its own unique way and I’m so glad

I’m so glad that it rains when I’m in my room because these little drops of water are beautiful

Because these thunderous sounds are musical

Because its messy effects are marvellous

And you said it’s just rain.
