I recently came across a picture of mine at my family’s house. It was an old picture from my elementary school days. It was one of those graduation pictures that you take as a child.

As I looked at this picture, I smiled. I remember the earrings I wore at the time and it made me chuckle.

I remember making mistakes in school as a child. I also remember feeling insecure and lost in elementary school.

Going down memory lane made me think about the life that I’m living now.

It’s made me think about all the things that have gone wrong. All the ways I have failed. All my mistakes and how I continue to summon the courage to tell myself that I should continue to be hopeful.

Maybe you have encountered mistakes in your life. Maybe you have encountered some big failures that make you question your self-worth, value and purpose.

This article is for you to know that it is okay, things happen and here is what you must remember.

Your Perception is Everything

When you go through big mistakes and challenges in life, it seems as though the world has come to an end.

Yet during those moments, you need to be mindful of your perception because it can make or break you.

See your mistakes as learning points as to ways you can do better. See your mistakes as learning points to understanding yourself and what you want from life.

One of my favourite quotes from Maya Angelou is that you may encounter many defeats in but you must not be defeated.

Do not be defeated. I repeat that Do Not Be Defeated.

Sometimes, Don’t Try So Hard

The mistakes I have made in my life have taught me that sometimes do not try so hard.

There are things I wish would have gone a certain way and I know how much I stressed and got so frustrated over trying to get a certain outcome.

At the end of the day, I felt stressed and frustrated. Please, do not try so hard sometimes.

Sometimes, we just have to take life easy. Don’t fuss over expectations and outcomes. Life becomes more peaceful when we can simply let things be.

There is a Purpose to Everything

I’m a woman of faith and it is my belief in God that keeps me moving forward.

When you can believe there is a purpose to everything, you trust that God has a plan for your life even when it does not make sense.

God has a plan for your life even if all things seem to be falling apart.

Let God guide you and teach you what to do when it seems as though you have made a complete mess of everything.

You are Human

I know that things didn’t work out the way you wanted but you are human. The fact that you are human means that YES, it is allowed for you to make mistakes.

Yes, it is allowed for you to be uncertain about your path and the next move to take. You are human.

Your Story is Yours to Tell

In life, we go through similar emotions. We feel happy, sad, get excited, hopeful or at times, feel afraid.

In life, we go through many similar emotions but we all have our own unique stories. We all have our own unique experiences.

Sometimes, I fret over what is and it can cause me to compare my life to others. In the midst of going down such a negative spiral, I have to tell myself that my life is mine.

My story and my journey is completely different. The life that God has designed for me to live can’t be compared to others.

When you start comparing your life negatively to others, what good does it do you? It simply leaves you feeling awful. Know that your story is yours to tell as imperfectly as you can.

Let The People That Matter, Matter

Stop wasting your time wondering what others are saying about you. Stop holding on to negative statements or attacks from people that do not matter to you.

Let the people that matter, matter.

The people that matter are the ones that genuinely care for you.

The people that matter are the ones that see the best in you.

The people that matter make you feel good about yourself.

Know who matters and who doesn’t because it will save you from headaches.

Be Kind to Yourself

When life appears to be cruel, you have to be kind to yourself. You have to be kind to yourself because you are doing the best that you can.

You have to be kind to yourself because you are deserving of all the GOOD things in life. Yes, even when you are not perfect. Even when you have made big mistakes. You are still deserving of all good things in life.

Final Thoughts

I have sort of become an expert at making mistakes. I have made mistakes in school. I have made mistakes in job selections. I have made mistakes in financial decisions. I have made mistakes in dating. I have unfortunately become an expert at making mistakes. So to you out there, making mistakes and feeling awful, it’s going to be alright.

Just take a deep breath and know that God is real. You are Human and There is More to Life. I wish you so much peace and grace on your journey.
